 1. Do the exercises first: Instead of doing the study first you do the questions and come back to master the relevant section. Exercises will not ask irrelevant questions. 

2. Ask questions: Ask the lecturer a few pertinent questions. He will give you the gist of the subject. It's better than to read a few books. 

3. Memory: According to him you can divide your memory into five parts. It is the maximum that you can remember. Let's say you have 20 points, just group them into five parts.
