“Don’t focus on having a great blog. Focus on producing a blog that’s great for your readers.” – Brian Clark
This article is written for those who wish to make some money out of his blog at Blogger.com. You can earn money from pay per click such as AdSense. You can also generate income from pay per action by joining affiliate programs such as Healthexpress and Sitesell.
Here are the twelve steps to establish your first blog:
1. Choose a niche: The first thing is to decide on the subject that you are going to write about. It should be a topic that you are passionate about and you know a lot about the subject. This is to ensure that you can continue to write without running out of ideas. The other thing to consider is that the subject must be able to attract a wide audience or else there will be few visitors to your blog.
2. Write 10 articles: Once you have made up your mind on your niche, the next thing is to write 10 unique, original, and appealing articles. This is to create an impactful first impression on your readers.
3. Get a name for your blog: Think of a creative name for your blog. It should be related to your niche. You may need to think of more than one name as the name you like may have been taken up
4. Sign up with Blogger: You are guided step by step to establish your first blog. When you have done that you can post your ten articles to excite the world.
5. AdSense and affiliate programs: Now you can place your AdSense ads and other ads on affiliate programs to match your articles. You can refer to this page for the placement of ads and also join the affiliate programs if they are relevant to your niche.
6. Submit Sitemap: Do not expect readers to come to your blog automatically the moment you have your ten articles posted First thing first. Submit your Sitemap to Google Webmaster, Yahoo, Bing (formerly Live Search, Windows Live Search, and MSN Search) and Ask.com. A Sitemap is to allow search engines to index the pages and content of your site. You can do so to submit a Blogger blog Sitemap by using http://nameof yourblog.blogspot.com/rss.xml or as an example: this is my sitemap: http://allaboutlivingwithlife.blogspot.com/atom.xml.
7. Getting noticed: Next, submit your blog to blog directories such as Technorati, Fuelmyblog, and Blogtoplist. You also need to submit your RSS feeds to such sites as FeedBurner and Feedcat.net.and ping (you ping to notify the services that you have updated your blog) your site at http://pingomatic.com.
8. Getting connected: The other thing for you to do is to join social networking sites (Twitter, Facebook. Plaxo, Plurk) and social bookmarking sites (Digg, Reddit, Mixx) to bookmark your articles. These are the places where the readers are. Use Ping.fm and Socialmarker to bookmark your articles.
9. Communicate: Go to other blogs with similar themes to pass constructive comments and join a forum to share your ideas with others with common interests.
10. Marketing tools: To promote viral effect add a “Share” button from http://www.addthis.com on your blog so that your readers can bookmark, add as favorites, print, or email your articles. The other thing is to add a Widgetbox from http://www.widgetbox.com on your blog to expose your articles and blog to many sites. Don’t forget to add an RSS feed on your blog so that readers can subscribe to your feed.
11. Decide posting frequency: Now that you have posted your ten articles the next thing is to decide how often you are going to do posting in a regular and consistent way. Post an article once a day or once a week? Make up your mind and do it like clockwork
12. Be persistent: Work for the long-term. There is no instant success. Write, post, bookmark your articles, and ping your site regularly.
Blogging is about writing, posting, marketing your articles, and connecting with your readers and other bloggers.
