According to a survey done by Jobstreet.com among 3000 employers more than a year ago revealed that 56 percent of those polled said the main stumbling block when hiring fresh graduates was their poor command of English.
Here are the problems faced by employers in hiring fresh graduates:
Poor command of English 55.8%
Poor character, attitude or personality 37.4%
Asking for unrealistic salary/benefits 33.0%
Mismatch of skill 30.2%
Choosy in job or company 27.7%
No demonstrated ability to solve problems 25.9%
Skill knowledge not in-depth enough 23.8%
No suitable opening available 15.6%
Ill-prepared for job interview 14.4%
Poor general knowledge 13.2%
Little or no interest in the job applied 7.8%
Graduated from lesser-known university 2.2%
Unemployed for too long 1.9%
Female graduates less suitable 1.3%
Poor command of Mandarin 1.1%
Poor command of Malay 0.7%
Other reasons 7.9%
From the survey, you will note that language is a major issue and there is no shortcut to overcoming it. To be good in any language you need to read widely, speak the language daily, listen to native speakers on the radio every day, and write often.
