6 Reasons of Unhappiness at Work

6 Reasons of Unhappiness at Work

According to the latest survey on Employee Job Satisfaction by JobStreet, 78% of employees out of 1145 respondents in Malaysia are unhappy at work. Among those surveyed 62% were saying that they would find another job if they could not find opportunities for career development and a balance in their work-life.

Here are the reasons why they are not happy working:

1.      The scope of work (34%): It is possible that they are given too much work to do or they do not like what they do. It is also likely that their skills are not matching with their scope of work and the work is boring.  Enjoying what you do is the key ingredient of happiness at work. You will find more happiness when you are able to apply what you have learned and the job is challenging.

2.      Poor relationship with their immediate supervisor or boss (21%): Working with a difficult boss is stressful especially when your boss does not appreciate and value your output.  You can change yourself to suit the working style of your boss, but you can’t change another person’s perception towards you. When you cannot live with it, you just have to move on.

3.      Low salary (17%): Only 11 percent felt they earned a good income. The survey reveals salary is not the main reason for unhappiness. Job satisfaction and fulfillment are. However, you must be fairly compensated. Ask for a raise, but you must do your homework well to justify your request.

4.      Company policies and benefits (12%): Does the establishment encourage creativity? Happiness is about doing things your way and meeting the expectations of the company. When the well-being of the employees is neglected, the morale of the staff is also affected negatively.

5.      Working hours (9%): Working long hours or doing too much overtime will impact productivity because output diminishes at the end of a working day. A work-life balance is more effective to sustain the optimum performance of workers and create happiness at work.

6.      Relationship with co-workers (8%): How is your working relationship with your co-workers?  Getting along well with co-workers will promote more happiness at work. Be interested in others so that others will show an interest in you. You treat others the way you want to be treated.

Are you happy at work? Take action and do what you can with what you have to regain your happiness.

5 Productive Ways to Go to Work

5 Productive Ways to Go to Work

How do you go to work in the morning productively? There are 5 simple, yet effective ways to do so:

1.       Be prepared: Have you got the to-do list ready for the day? It is an important tool for you to manage your daily activities productively.  The tasks are written and important jobs are prioritized. You are ready to attack the first major task, which is also tough, of the day with full force and resolve. When you have planned and are organized you are in control.

2.       Be energetic: Do not rush off to work without your breakfast. Have a nutritious breakfast leisurely. Enjoy eating without reading newspapers or doing other things. You need abundant energy to start a new day at work and not just a cup of coffee.

Never work before breakfast; if you have to work before breakfast, eat your breakfast first.
Josh Billings

3.       Be smart:  Dress smart and create a positive image of yourself before you step out of the house.  Impress others with a neat appearance and it tells them that you do your work just as meticulously as the way you look after your image. When you look good, you feel good and create a feeling of confidence in yourself.

4.       Be on time: Show up on time or go to work early when you have more to do for the day. It is better than working late because in the early morning you can work more productively without distractions, disturbances, and interruptions. You know there are many people who cannot go to work on time and give a lot of lame excuses. Show to others that you are capable of self-management.

5.       Be happy: There is nothing better than going to work cheerfully. Acknowledge and smile at people you meet. Signal to others that you are feeling on top of the world. People will know that you are responsive and approachable.  Work with happiness and you work productively.

Go to work productively and you will have a great day ahead of you.

8 More Negative Thinking to Avoid at Work

8 More Negative Thinking to Avoid at Work

You behave and act according to what you think. It is essential that you avoid these negative thoughts because they will jeopardize your career outlook.

1.       I have not enough time: It is your job to plan ahead and get organized for your daily tasks to be completed in a timely fashion.  The key is to aim for productivity. If the work is really overwhelmed, you need to discuss it with your superior. However, you have to show him or her what you have done in order to justify your case.

2.       I am not appreciated: Do self-promotion. Do not work unnoticed. Show your boss what you have done and how you have overcome problems. Get the attention of your boss and be appreciated.

3.       I think more of money: Focus on the money will not earn you more money. Concentrate on the job and perform better will get you appreciated, promoted, and rewarded with more money.

4.       I want to change job: Do not think that when you change to a new job, all your problems will disappear. It could be worse.  Change yourself by changing your thinking about your job. Look at it from a fresh perspective. The situation is not as bad as you think.

5.       I am affected by the negative business environment: Look at the bright side of things and see how you can contribute to reduce expenses or improve turnover in a business downturn. Do something. It is better than inaction.

6.       I want to know what others have to say about my work: Do what you think is right, seek personal improvement and be self-motivated. There is no need to get approval from others or allow negative criticism to discourage your good work.

7.       I can only do what I can do: To make progress in life is to stretch your comfort zone. Making changes or doing something new is the way to move ahead. Even if you make mistakes, you will still gain valuable experience.

8.       It‘s not my fault: Instead of pointing fingers, look for a solution to the problem. You work to get things done. Be creative to overcome obstacles. You don’t work for the company, you work for yourself. You add more value to yourself as a solution provider. You thereby transform your personal brand.

The way to move forward is to think of possibilities, work with confidence and look for solutions creatively.

7 Painless Ways To Get Vigorous At Work

This is a guest post by Harrison Li:
7 Painless Ways To Get Vigorous At Work

Realizing time is too short?
Think that you will never have enough time for your personal pursuits, hobbies, and freedom?
Productivity is something we all want to maximize; how can you get more work done, of better quality, with the same amount of time you get every day?
The following are seven measly little tips that help you do more work and do better work:

1. Stay offline, thoroughly
The number one-time killer is the internet.
Technology is two-sided, it helps make our lives easier, on the other hand, it distracts us from focusing.
This point is specifically aimed at those who work on the computer, get offline. No, that doesn't mean closing your browser, that means unplugging the actual cable from your machine.
Or turn off the wireless card (for laptops).

2. Declutter your workspace
Clean up your working environment will improve your ability to focus.
Here's what you should do: everything you see in your room, ask yourself this question "how is this going to maximize my productivity?", and if it doesn't, you know what to do.
Get rid of them.
Minimize objects of wants, and keep the items you need.

3. Start with the toughest
And work your way towards the bottom of the hill.
By eliminating the hardest barriers first, you'll conserve sufficient energy for other smaller tasks, because we always have the most energy in the beginning.
Save the relaxing for the end, because in the end, you'll literally get to relax.

4. Sleep early, wake up early
What you are capable to do is determined by the energy you have, and that can only be recovered from a good night's sleep.
Sleep is everything.
It determines your health, your ability to focus, your overall performance...etc.
The problem is, most people sacrifice this recovery to trade for a practical time, what would you choose? Try naps.

5. Set the most important tasks
One word: prioritize.
Find three tasks you believe are the most important of everything and set them at the top of your schedule, nothing else.
Once you have finished these three tasks, then head off to smaller bits of work.

6. Time yourself and break
Let's get realistic, we all need breaks.
Yeah sure, you may be able to push yourself, but in the long run, this is negative. Why?
  • It hinders work efficiency.
  • Lowers work quality.
  • Blurs concentration and focus.
Just to name a few. It's better off to get a 15-30 minutes break after a period of hard work.

7. Do it fully
Understand what to do at the right moment.
If it's a break, relax fully, if it's work time, work fully.
If you want to produce the maximum results and achieve the best, you must ignore all that is unnecessary around you, and focus 100% only on the task you're doing.
And that means no mobile phones, no music, no anything that does not help you in your work.
Imagine yourself on a plane, all you can do is sit there and work with no internet access. Thus, forcing yourself to work.

Summing these handy tips up...
  • Disconnect yourself from the internet
  • Simplify your workspace and get rid of useless things
  • Start with your toughest tasks
  • Maintain good sleeping patterns (8 hours is great)
  • Prioritize your 3 most important tasks to do first
  • Time yourself of work time then take a break
  • Do what you are doing fully with 100% focus
I'm sharing 7 tips with you; care to share 1 with me? Let me know your best productivity trick in the discussion below.

I’m Harrison Li; I talk about life improvement, getting results, managing wealth and relationships. See something new at Mind Fuels – a place of simpleness.

How to be Mindful at Work

How to be Mindful at Work

To be mindfully engaged is the most natural, creative state we can be in.
Ellen Langler

Mindfulness at work involves physical, mental, and psychological well-being. Here are 7 ways to work mindfully:

1.      Restful: Mindfulness at work starts with your restful sleep. Are you having enough sleep every night? A good night’s sleep is the natural way to renew your energy and start a new day fresh and alert.

2.      Energetic: Are you taking care of your health? Do you exercise daily? It is the way to be fit and work calmly and mindfully. Daily challenges demand your energy and concentration at work.

3.      Prepared: Are you ready to start a new day every day? Do you have a daily to-day list? It is a productive way to work mindfully one task at a time without worrying about anything else. It is also to avoid multitasking and rushing about getting things done and be stressful.

4.      Be early: It is a good idea to start work early if you have more things to do in a day. By working ahead of others you create an atmosphere for quality work because you can work with peace of mind without getting distracted or disturbed by others.

5.      Create a mindfulness environment: Is your place of work conducive to mindfulness? Can you work in peace? Is it bright enough for you to do work without getting sleepy? Is there a pot of plants on your desk to cheer you up? Plants promote positive energy flow.

6.      Work with your heart: Are you passionate about your work?  Your work is your reputation. Be interested in what you do so you will do your best and gain the trust of others.  Taking pride in your work is to work with focus and attention.

7.       Creative attitude: Mindfulness at work is thinking about improvement, making changes for the better, and getting more productive.  Be happy at work so that your mind is more relaxed to conceive new ideas. To get ahead is to avoid getting stagnant.

Be physically and mentally fit and psychologically positive to work mindfully.

Work to Live and Live to Work and be Happy

Work to Live and Live to Work and be Happy

According to a survey as reported in the news, 50% of employees in Malaysian work to live and not live to work.  Randstad Holding’s survey also showed that 62% of Malaysian employees considered a good salary more important than job satisfaction.

When you work to live you find satisfaction in your job more important than your salary. If you work to live your job is only a means to an end.  Though good pay is important, your interests are somewhere else.

Live to work

It is good to enjoy what you do and be passionate about your job because you are measured by your performance. It is very likely that you will be handsomely compensated as you are doing a good job even though you may not pay much attention to your salary. For those who find their job interesting and do not mind working long hours, they are warned that work is not everything in their life.

Work to live

If you work to live, you must remember that you have to perform well in order to keep the job. It is better for you to develop an interest in your work and be engaged in it. Doing things half-heartedly is not the way to work and it will not get you anywhere.  On the other hand, it is good to have many interests in life so that you can lead a balanced lifestyle.

The best of both worlds

The best thing in life is to land a challenging job that you find fulfilling and rewarding at the same time. You may love your job but you must not bring work home or work late all the time. You have to care for your family. Your presence at home is important for family happiness. You also need time to do workout to stay healthy and fit. You also have to spend the time to socialize and get connected. Getting involved in a community project is also a meaningful way to spend your time.

Happiness is to live to work and work to live.

10 Things Taiwanese Workers are Unhappy About

10 Things Taiwanese Workers are Unhappy About

According to Yes123, an employment site in Taiwan, there are top 10 things that workers are unhappy about:

1.       Lowe pay (19.3%)
2.       Poor welfare (12.7)
3.       Sacrifice quality of life (10.8%)
4.       Long working hours (9.4%)
5.       The work is not what I am interested in (8.4%)
6.       Too much work (8%)
7.       Can’t stand the boss (7.5%)
8.      Under pressure to meet targets (6.9%)
9.       No time to spend with family (6.8)
10.   Can’t get along with co-workers (3.9%)

What do you do in such situations?
Ideas to consider:

·         Create value for yourself: Acquire additional skills and be more competent at work. The key is to be more productive. You are measured by your performance. Be prepared for a promotion.

·         Ask for it: One effective way to get a pay raise is to ask for it. Before you do, do your homework. Are you performing as expected?  Did your boss notice your good work?  Ask for it at the right time when the boss is in good mood. You may not get it; but if you don’t ask there is no way to get a pay increment.

·         Work Smart: Plan ahead and get organized.  Do what is important. Work with focus and without distractions. Work on one task at a time and take breaks to regain your energy and concentration. You may not like your job but you have to develop an interest in it and get things done.

·         Change your attitude: Examine yourself closely. Do you need to change your attitude?
Do you show up on time? Do you get things done as promised? Do you miss deadlines often? You have to gain the trust of others in you. Can you accept constructive criticism? Are you willing to make changes?

·         Work with others: Working together in harmony is the way at work. Learn to be interested in others. Pay attention to the people around you and get others to be interested in you.

·         Lifestyle: Your work is important and so is your family. Start a new day early to avoid working overtime if you can. Spending time with children and spouse is important because family happiness will contribute greatly to your career well-being. Go for a balanced life.

·         Change your job: Before making a move, you have to change yourself and your attitude. A new job may get you a higher pay and better welfare. You will be frustrated in a new job with a negative attitude.

Wish you more happiness at work.

7 Effective Ways to Delegate

Effective ways to delegate

The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it. ~Theodore Roosevelt

You know you can’t do everything by yourself. In order to work effectively, you have to delegate. Delegation is an effective way to display your leadership ability. However, when other people are doing the job, you are still responsible for the outcome. To get things done as expected through others, it is important to observe a few things:

1.      The right person for the right job: Look for people who are enthusiastic and eager to learn new things. It is important to match the right job to the right person. The new job should be challenging enough to ignite the fire in the person doing the job.

2.      Be clear about what to do: Get it right from the beginning, be very clear about the job scope. Define precisely the boundary of the job. Explain in no uncertain terms what needs to be done.

3.      Expected results and deadlines: The person doing the job must know what the expected results are and when the job is to be completed.

4.      Support: Allow the new person to do things his or her way, do not micromanage.  The main thing is to focus on the results. Let the new person develop his or her potential because they may be able to execute the job in a better way.

Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity. ~George S Patton

5.      Follow up: It is essential to follow up from time to time and check their performance. Do expect mistakes, but rectify as early as possible. Regular review is a way to tell the other person that you care about them.

6.      Get feedback: Find out about their response to the new assignment. Solicit ideas from them to get things done more efficiently and effectively.

7.      Provide feedback: It is vital to notify and show appreciation for a job executed correctly and done well. It is an excellent way to motivate them to work harder and promote their creativity. Delegation is an effective way to groom future leaders.

No person will make a great business who wants to do it all himself or get all the credit. ~Andrew Carnegie

More Ways to be Happy at Work

Happy

There is joy in work. There is no happiness except in the realization that we have accomplished something.-- Henry Ford

You are employed because of what you can do for the company. So, work is about contributing and providing value. Happiness is what you get when you can give at work. The more you can give, the more valuable and happier you will be.  Here are the things that you can do at work to boost your happiness

1.      Positive attitude: Happiness is from the inside out. If you don’t go to work happily, will you be able to work happily? Start a new day and every day with a cheerful frame of mind.  Go to work with excitement and enthusiasm in the morning. Your positive thoughts will energize and kick-start every new day at work.

2.      Enthusiastic about your work: Do you like your work? Do you enjoy what you do at work? Happiness is to like what you do and enjoying it. Be passionate about your work and get into the flow of work. Make your life at work a pleasant one so that you can stay happy.

3.      Take responsibility: You are happy when you are proud of your work. You work with care and aim for excellence. Your work represents you. People respect you when they respect your work.  Looking after your reputation is an effective way to be happy at work.

The secret of joy in work is contained in one word - excellence. To know how to do something well is to enjoy it.-- Pearl S. Buck

4.      Sharpen your skills: Happy people are open-minded. They don’t rest on their laurels. They continue to learn and get to know more. They know that better skills produce better work. A valued and appreciated employee is a happy employee.

5.      Getting organized: Happiness is planning your work and working your plan. It is a productive and less stressful way to get a thing done in an orderly manner. When you are on top of things, you work confidently and happily.

6.      Building relationships: Knowing what to expect from your boss and working accordingly to look after his or her interests is the best policy to build a lasting working relationship. Keeping your boss posted at each stage of your progress is the way to get noticed. Building relationships are also building the trust of the boss in you. You can work happily knowing that your boss can count on you and without having to spy on you every now and then.

Never continue in a job you don't enjoy. If you're happy with what you're doing, you'll like yourself, you'll have inner peace. And if you have that, along with physical health, you will have had more success than you could possibly have imagined.-- Johnny Carson

5 Successful Ways for Newly Employed

5 Successful Ways for Newly Employed

If you put all your strength and faith and vigor into a job and try to do the best you can, the money will come. ~Lawrence Welk

Congratulations!  You have successfully secured your first job.  Take the opportunity to do the right things from the beginning.  Developing good habits and building a long-term career for advancement are the steps to take. Here are five things that matter the most when you have just started out:

1.       Build trust: You were employed because of your technical capabilities. The employer is not so sure how much you can be trusted in how you do the job. It is important to build the trust of others in you right from the beginning. Go to work early. Get the job done fully as required and promise only when you can deliver. It takes a long time to build trust. Work diligently to build your reputation.

2.       Reaching out: The first important thing is to get to know your job. Be observant, listen, and learn from others. As you learn to write it down because you cannot remember everything. Get to know the nitty-gritty of your job by asking questions. Be humble so that others will tech you willingly. Find out the structure and culture of the establishment. Be willing to accept criticism with an open mind.

3.       Build relationships: Building rapport with fellow colleagues by remembering people’s names. Acknowledge others with a smile. Cooperate with others and get things done as instructed so that you will be likable.

4.       Work hard: There is no substitute for hard work. You can work smart but you still have to put in the effort and be ready to do more to show your interest in your new job.  Working more and talking less is the way to go.

The only thing that overcomes hard luck is hard work. ~Harry Golden

5.       Be responsible:  Show excitement and enthusiasm in your new job. Whatever you do your work comes first. This is to establish commitment. Do what you have to do, big or small, meticulously and aim for excellence.

There is joy in work. There is no happiness except in the realization that we have accomplished something. ~Henry Ford

To find out what one is fitted to do, and to secure an opportunity to do it, is the key to happiness. ~John Dewey

7 Effective Ways to Increase Your Earning Power

Increase Your Earning Power

The debt crisis in Europe is looming large. It impacts negatively all nations around the world. When a nation is affected, individuals are also worried about their job. Instead of dwelling and magnifying the problem which may not happen, you might as well focus your energy on increasing your earning potential.  Here are some productive ways to enhance your earning power:

1.       Marketable Skills: The most important thing is your skills. Do you possess skills that are in demand right now? Be an expert in a relevant field to differential yourself from others. I am 63 yet I am employed full-time doing finance and accounting work. Besides that, I speak three languages.  My financial skills are essential in any business and knowing a few languages is an advantage in a multi-racial society. More importantly, your skills must be able to translate into more revenue for the company or getting a higher profit. It is the performance that counts.

2.       Social skills: It is about networking and getting to know more people. The only way is to reach out. You may have the skills, but getting to know the right person may land you in another higher-paying job.

3.       Soft skills: You may possess the right skills, but if you do not work with the right soft skills, your earning power may be curtailed. Soft skills are your attitude at work. Do you love your work? Are you enthusiastic at work? Do you work with confidence? Are you organized? Do you get things done and meet deadlines? Are you likable? Can you easily get what you want like a pay raise when you ask for it?

4.       People skills: Another important skill is getting work done through others. You can’t do everything by yourself. You have to delegate in order to be productive. Pay attention to other people so that others will do work willingly and wholeheartedly for you.

5.       A part-time job: A part-time job is not just working part-time. It is a springboard leading to a business of your own to increase your earnings tremendously. Identify the marketable skills in your hobbies and develop slowly into a full-time income. Writing is another skill of mine. I am writing articles part-time on my blog. My aim is to earn a full-time income by blogging.

6.       Continue to educate yourself: Another vital skill is learning to learn. There is a deluge of information and we have to select what is relevant because we want to apply what we have learnt and been more productive. So, update your skills and learn other suitable skills too. Never stop reading. If you can get an online degree to get a better position with better pay, do it.

7.       Change: Be ready for the next move, be prepared to change job. It is another way to gain more experience and better pay. Stepping out of your comfort zone is risky. But if you don’t make a move, there will be no progress.

What else can you do to increase your earning power?

5 Effective Ways to Start Monday

5 Effective Ways to Start Monday

On a Monday do you drag your feet and dread going to work? You are not alone because there are many others who find it hard to get into the mood to work on a Monday morning. Here are the things that you can do to start Monday on the right note:

1.       Live in the moment:  According to Richard Carlson, the author of Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff, there are people who belong to the Thank God It’s Friday club or Thank God It’s Monday club. These people are in the wrong clubs because TGIF club members like only two days in a week and on Sunday they are not too happy because they have to go to work the next day. The members of TGIM are workaholics.  These people are working under stress and on Friday they are not too happy because they cannot go to work for the next two days. Richard is asking you to be a member of Thank God It’s Today. It does not matter what day of the week it is, every day is a nice day. The take-home message is that you should focus on living one day at a time and be happy every day.

2.       Plan for it: The best way to live life is to plan ahead and live orderly. It is more productive and less stressful. Do it every Sunday so that you can look ahead with peace of mind as you have organized the following week in advance.

3.       Sufficient sleep on Sunday night: Avoid staying up late on Sunday to avoid getting up late on Monday morning. It is to avoid having to rush about to get to work. It is a sure way to ruin your Monday.

4.       Look forward to it: Positive anticipation is the right attitude to kick start Monday. Get up early and be excited to get things done. Remember you have already planned ahead? Dress your best and feel good about yourself. Walk with your head up and greet people you meet with a broad smile.

5.       Focus: For members of TGIF and TGIM clubs don’t think of the weekend for good or for bad. Pay attention to what you do so that you are immersed in your work and before you know Monday is almost over and work gets done.

How do you get to work on a Monday morning?
