10 Simple Ways to be Happy at Work

I Love My Job

Happiness does not come from doing easy work but from the afterglow of satisfaction that comes after the achievement of a difficult task that demanded our best. - Theodore Isaac Rubin

There is no need to pursue happiness at work. It comes naturally to you when you possess the right mental attitude and do the right things at the right time.

1.     Organized: The world is in your hand when you are prepared. Get ready a to-do list before you start a new day. When you prioritize your work according to your list you are ready to tackle the first important task in the morning with full force.

A tidy desk with a pot of plants on your desk will calm your mind and allow you to work with focus. According to an article, Plants in offices increase happiness and productivity, "What was important was that everybody could see a plant from their desk. If you are working in an environment where there's something to get you psychologically engaged you are happier and you work better," said Dr. Chris Knight from Exeter University.

2.     Start early: You are ahead of others in getting things done in the shortest possible time because you will be able to work mindfully without disturbances and interruption. Upon the arrival of other staff, you are ready to take a well-deserved break.

3.     Care of your body: Do you go to bed early so that you can get up early to greet a new day with energy? Are you following a healthy lifestyle such as a balanced diet and drinking enough water while at work? Are you thinking right to boost your confidence?  Happiness is a healthy body and a healthy mind.

4.     Be passionate: Do you enjoy what you do? Develop an interest in your work and work with your heart. It is a sure way to be happy at work.

You do your best work if you do a job that makes you happy. - Bob Ross

5.     Flow experience: When you are passionate about your work, it is no longer work for you.  You will immerse in what you do and forget about the passage of time.

6.    Be productive: You are productive when you are efficient and effective. You think of better ways of getting things done by getting creative.  An aha moment is the greatest joy of all at work.

7.     Be positive: Wear a smile, walk with confidence and dress smartly. When you are looking good you feel good inside and out. Be friendly and helpful so that you inspire others and project a positive image.

8.     Learn: Learning is a pleasurable experience. You gain more knowledge and keep yourself up-to-date. Reading sharpens your mind to face challenges in life resourcefully.

9.      Expand your comfort zone: You will be more comfortable when you solve more problems at work. Do more and help others to be more competent at work.

All happiness depends on courage and work. - HonorĂ© de Balzac

10.         Gratitude and appreciation: Be grateful that you are trusted at work. Show an appreciation for keeping your job. You walk tall because you are gainfully employed and enjoying financial well-being.

The best way to appreciate your job is to imagine yourself without one - Oscar Wilde

Think right, do right and be happy at work.

3 QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF DAILY TO FEEL MORE SATISFIED AT WORK

@ WORK

FORWARD THINKING IS GREAT--BUT IT ALSO MAKES YOU LOSE SIGHT OF PROGRESS. USE THIS EXERCISE TO SHIFT SOME FOCUS TO YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

Caroline Ghosn has trouble acknowledging her successes. The Levo League founder and CEO certainly have a lot to be proud of, but like so many hard-working, forward-thinking startup leaders, she focuses on the future, rather than her past accomplishments.
About two months ago, she realized that she wasn't very happy, even though she had every reason to feel fulfilled by her career. "I don't know why I'm not sleeping well," she said to career coach MJ Ryan. "I don't know why I'm not feeling 100% happy with every moment of this experience." Ghosn, who runs a mentorship and networking organization, isn't alone in her feelings. A Levo League survey found that 47% of the service's users are not satisfied with their careers on a day-to-day basis.
With the help of Ryan, Ghosn diagnosed the problem. "The busier you get and the more forward-looking you become, the more difficult it is to actually acknowledge and gain strength and inspiration from the things you've already accomplished, which can become problematic when you're in a startup," she told Fast Company. "You can lose sight of progress."
The goal to a happier work life, then, is to find a way to recognize past successes, which for Ghosn is as simple as asking the following three questions every single work day:
1. What am I thankful for today? This does not have to be work related, just anything at all.
2. What did I enjoy today? "Keeping a pulse of what energizes you is really important," says Ghosn.
3. What am I satisfied with today? "This question is particularly important if you're one of those people who is seeking excellence and always trying to progress along a path," Ghosn explains. "The shadow side of that is that you might never feel like you're in the place you want to be."
These questions effectively create what Ghosn calls a "to-done" list. Instead of crossing off tasks, you're tallying accomplishments. Not only do all of those little dopamine hits start to add up, but over time you will get a sense of the types of things that energize and inspire.
This practice relies, in part, on the cult of mindfulness--the business buzzword of the moment that suggests dedicating time to meditative practices will boost productivity and creativity. By taking the time to reflect on her life, she recognizes her achievements, and in theory, that leads her to produce better work.
"I really believe that cultivating creativity as general principle is about managing your energy," she explained. "And if cultivating creativity is about managing your energy, then managing your energy is about exercises like these that are about achieving mindfulness."
So far, she says she feels happier, more satisfied, and fulfilled. "My team will tell me I'm more comfortable in my skin, a little less hard on myself--just a lot more comfortable with the fact that we're moving in the direction that I feel we should be moving in." And she believes that all of that has led her to greater, and better, output.
She credits the success of her mantra with her dedication to the questions. "The strength from the exercise comes from the ability to form a habit around it and repeatedly execute it day-to-day," she explained. It forces her to focus on everyday accomplishments, instead of over-representing failures, which so many of us do.

10 Great Ways to be Employable

10 Great Ways to be Employable

Employability refers to a person's capability for gaining and maintaining employment.

Hillage and Pollard, 1998

Why Working Overtime is Bad for You

Why Working Overtime is Bad for You

You are not performing: You may work late, but your output is not commensurate with the time spent. It implies that you are not effective and efficient.

Out of balance: Spending more time at work means less personal and family time. Rest and recreation are crucial to regaining your composure.  Taking time out to exercise is necessary to stay fit and be energetic at work.  Neglecting your family is a sure way to a deteriorating relationship with loved ones. It will eventually affect your peace of mind at work.

Health problems: Working overtime may be a way to move up the ladder but it comes with a heavy price tag. Your health will suffer. As you work long hours, you get tired more easily and you will not be able to concentrate for long. It is reported that    Overtime Work Linked With Higher Depression Risk.

You are not a smart worker: There are other ways to impress the boss instead of working overtime. Keeping your boss informed of your progress is a great way to show that you are really working without having to work overtime. Solving problems at work is another excellent way to show your true worth.

Staying late is not working late: You may just want to show your face in the office, chit-chatting with your colleagues and not actually doing work. It is a waste of time.

Work smart. You are measured by what you can do and not how late you work every day.

Are You Unemployed or Unemployable?

Are You Unemployed or Unemployable?

When you are unemployed, it may mean that jobs are scarce and openings are few. You are employable but you cannot get one. On the other hand, an unemployable person is someone who is not suitable to be employed even though there are jobs available.
Those unemployable are among the fresh graduates. Academically they do well, but some other things are lacking in them:

·         Marketable skills: You can study a subject that you are interested in, but more importantly the knowledge and skills you are going to acquire must be in demand. Check online and find out what is trending in the business world.  Go for evergreen courses such as accountancy and nursing.

·         Basic soft skills: It is not surprising to find newly employed who do not show politeness. They don’t greet you when they see you, let alone a smile.  Saying please and thank you is hard to get.  They do not show up on time and they could be missing in action or a few days without prior notice.

·         Language skills: They are not proficient in English which is widely used in business and on the Net.  Effective communication is a problem at work.

·         Enthusiasm: They do not find excitement in the job they do. Maybe they are not interested because they work to live. They find interest in other things in life.

·         Analytical skills: According to Wikipedia, analytical skill is the ability to visualize, articulate, and solve both complex and uncomplicated problems and concepts and make decisions that are sensical based on available information. It means they find it difficult to deal with problems for which they are expected to solve.

Be employable and be employed.

10 Advantages of a To-Do List

To-do list
A to-do list is a simple yet powerful working tool. The list consists of your routine daily tasks and the tasks relating to your long-term goals. It is even something that you have promised your son to do. It may not be important but you have to keep the promise. The list has a far-reaching positive effect on the list maker. A to-do list is beneficial and useful in many ways:

1. It is in writing: All the tasks are listed and nothing has been left out. You will not forget to do; unless you have not taken out from your shirt pocket and looked at it. It is a constant reminder of the things to do. The same list can still continue to be used until all tasks are done with.

2. It is prioritized according to the importance of each task: You will attend to the most important task first thing in the morning. With the list, you stay focus on the right thing to do

3. No need to remember: It is to free your mind for creative thinking. It is more productive than committing the list to your memory and you may forget one to two things in the end.

4. The satisfaction of a job accomplished: When you tick or cross out a task as soon as it is done, it gives you a sense of achievement and you will be pleased to know that you can get things done.

5. Boost your confidence: By following the list faithfully, it confirms that you are a self-starter. You don’t procrastinate and you get things done right away

6. An organized person: When you follow the list you don’t rush about to get things done but you execute the work smoothly and there is no panic situation or stress.

7. Do less but accomplished more: You may not have spent a lot of time to complete the most important task but you have achieved the desired results. You are productive by following the 80/20 rule.

8. Advance planning: Making a to-do list every day is actually carrying out advance planning. It is, in fact, an effective and efficient way to GTD.

9. A good night’s sleep: The list is usually done in the evening to plan for the following day. When the list is done, it gives you peace of mind and you can go to sleep soundly as you have taken care of the tasks ahead of you.

10. Better time management: It means there will be time for you to take breaks between tasks. You will also have more time to do things you enjoy doing

Start making a list tonight. Don’t be too ambitious and make a long list. It should be manageable, attainable, and meaningful to you.

10 Instant Productive Working Habits

Mindful at work
Productive habits promote your effectiveness and efficiency at work. Here are the things that you can do to be more productive:

1. To-do list: It is the best productivity tool to organize a day’s work. The tasks are prioritized and you just follow the list accordingly. There is no panic situation or stress as you are in full control.

2. One task at a time: The only way to get things done smoothly once and for all is to concentrate on one task at a time. Your mind is focused and you are unlikely to make mistakes.

3. Tickle file: This file has two sections. One section is divided into 31 slots to cover 31 days of each month. The other section has twelve slots for twelve months in a year. At the end of a month, say, December, you transfer and file items relating to January into their respective dates. Upon completion of the to-do list for the day it is, again, filed in the January folder and ready to be used next year. This file complements your daily to-do list. You don’t have to remember the things you have to do but you will get things done by checking the file every day.

4. Mindful: When you are at work leave your personal problems at home. Just immerse yourself in your work. Forget about the blunders made yesterday and the things to be done tomorrow. Live and work at the moment.

5. Think: Make it a habit to think of the work you do every day, be resourceful and creative to find better working methods for effectiveness and efficiency.

6. Dress to kill: Your smart and clean appearance will instantly project an image of confidence. Others will be impressed by your packaging.

7. Speak slowly, clearly, and precisely: Communicate in a strong voice, but talk in a pleasant tone so that others can understand your message easily.

8. 80/20 rule: 80% of your achievement is derived from 20% of your work done. Identify and concentrate your effort on the 20% to boost productivity.

9. Build trust: The first impression is important. Make sure that you can deliver the first time what you have promised to do. Trust can only be earned and it is a long-term effort. The best policy is to under-promise and over-deliver

10. Manage your emotions positively: Be aware of your emotions and avoid expressions of anger or resentment. Be cheerful at work and greet others with a broad smile.

Your productive habits will complement your expertise and your people skills to propel you to greater height in your career.

10 Tips to Work Smart and Achieve More

Work Smart & Achieve More

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.”

Mark Twain

Working smart is not working hard. It is doing less and achieved more. It is getting a few important tasks done in the shortest possible time but accomplished even more.

 1. 80/20 rule: It means doing 20 % of the work and getting 80% of the output. Check your daily to-do list and focus on the few important tasks that yield the greatest benefits and delegate the rest

 2. Take breaks: When you are tired, take a break to clear the clutter in your mind. You will be able to solve the problem easily that you have encountered earlier.

 3. Be thorough in your work: Check carefully to make sure that nothing is left out and it is completed as required. Use your checklist to avoid missing items. Do it once correctly and no more.

 4. Don’t plunge into your work: When you are given a new assignment, find out the most effective and most efficient ways to do the job. Spending a little bit of time to explore the nature of the work will make your work very much easier.

 5. Be a specialist: People are more impressed when you are an expert in a particular field. You will be the person people look upon in your area of expertise. You have the right answers and the right ways to do something and people are glad to take your advice.

 6. Under promise and over deliver: Instead of over promise and under deliver, do the opposite; deliver more than what you have promised. People will be surprised and delighted when you outperform.

 7. Do things you are interested: You always do your best because you enjoy doing it and the more you do the better it gets. Your mind will be focused and you always put on your thinking cap to imagine and create better methods or systems to get things done.

 8. Plan ahead: Advance planning means getting things done smoothly and efficiently. There is no rush and there is no panic situation.

 9. Take advantage of technology: Employ software or the right tools to get your work done in less time but more efficiently. Be sure to let your PC do most of your job more accurately and faster.

 10. Health: Are you physically fit and mentally alert? You perform better when you are calm, full of energy and mental focus.

When you get things done with your full concentration, you make fewer mistakes and save valuable time to redo something. Isn’t it a smart way to work? Getting organized and using the right tools to do the right things at the right time are the most effective ways to achieve more by doing less.
