7 Ways to Maintain a Healthy Brain

Healthy Brain

The brain is a monstrous, beautiful mess. Its billions of nerve cells-called neurons-lie in a tangled web that displays cognitive powers far exceeding any of the silicon machines we have built to mimic it. ~ William F. Allman

At the moment, there is no one recognized definition of brain health. Most existing definitions have only a general description of normal brain function or emphasize one or two dimensions of brain health. The US Centers for Health and  Disease Control and Prevention defined brain health as the ability to perform all the mental processes of cognition, including the ability to learn and judge, use language, and remember. The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) presidential advisory defined optimal brain health as “average performance levels among all people at that age who are free of known brain or other organ system diseases in terms of decline from function levels, or as adequacy to perform all activities that the individual wishes to undertake.”

There are 7 ways to keep your brain healthy :

1. Mental activities

  • Learn a new language
  • Use a different route to do your daily tasks
  • Listen to or learn to  play a musical instrument
  • Learn a new skill like using a new software program and teach someone the new skill
  • Use all your senses like eating a meal in a restaurant for the first time. taste your food, smell it, feel the crockery cutlery and furniture.  observe the environment and listen to the voices of people.
  • Word power: You are good at English but you can stimulate your brain by playing word games and at the same time enrich your vocabulary
  • Play card games like gin rummy, poker, solitaire, and bridge
  • Reading
  • Go online
  • Challenge and exercise your brain with jigsaw puzzles, sudoku, and other brain teasers

Participation in mental exercises won’t be effective if you're not overall healthy. Some of the factors linked to decreased brain function are diabetes, hypertension, obesity, head trauma, sleep apnea, clinical depression, bipolar disorder, and alcoholism.

2. Exercise

Exercise has a direct brain connection when you consider what it actually does. What we tend to overlook are the feedback loops that connect the brain to every cell in the body. Therefore when you throw a ball, run on a treadmill, or jog along the shore, billions of cells are "seeing" the outside world. The chemicals transmitted from the brain are acting the way sense organs do, making contact with the outside world and offering stimulation from that world. This is why the jump from being sedentary to doing a minimal amount of exercise - such as walking, light gardening, and climbing the stairs instead of taking the elevator - is so healthy. Your cells want to be part of the world. -DEEPAK CHOPRA

Some of the things you can do:

  • Brisk walking
  • Jogging
  • Swimming
  • Gardening
  • Dancing
  • Resistance training such as push-up
Do it  daily   to  reap  the benefits

3. Get Connected

  • Meet up with friends
  • Join a class
  • Participate in community projects
  • Stay close to family, friends, and relatives

4. Healthy Diet

  • Fish
  • Fresh vegetables
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Fruits and berries
  • Dark chocolate
  • Whole grains
  • Coffee
The most important thing is to avoid processed food.

5. Manage Stress

  • Sleep well
  • Relax
  • Exercise
  • A balanced life
  • Tai Chi
  • Meditation
  • Yoga
6. Be Safe
  • Fasten your seatbelt when driving
  • Wear a crash helmet while cycling
  • Put on safety gears while at work in construction sites
  • Avoid smoking and using illegal drugs
7.  hydration

According to DENT Nurologival Institue, 75% of the brain is made up of water. therefore, drinking water throughout the day is vital for your optimum brain health. What can hydration do to your brain?
  • Boosts your memory function
  • Better concentrationa and mental alertness
  • Avoid mood swings and improve the brain's efficiency

How many languages are you proficient in?

How many languages are you proficient in?

There is a saying: Luck is what happens when opportunity meets preparation. First of all, school is the place where you start building a strong foundation. With a good grounding, you prepare yourself for the next step by studying for the subject that you are interested in.

While you are doing that the crucial thing is to polish your language skills. It is not enough to be good at one language, especially in Malaysia. Look at the politicians, they speak fluently in English, Mandarin, and Bahasa Malaysia. If you want to be competitive you have to master three languages. When you are prepared you are ready to grab any opportunity that comes your way. You will have no regret.

How I spend my retirement and Stay Healthy during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Happy & Healthy Retirement

“Don’t simply retire from something; have something to retire to.” – Harry Emerson Fosdick

I stopped my part-time work and call it a day in March during the COVID-19 pandemic. I was 72 and I decided not to continue working and avoid being infected with the coronavirus.

I still spend time productively even though I have retired.

I usually get up at around 6.00 am. while I am still in bed awaken I perform several stretching exercises such as knee hug, child's pose,  knee raise, and kegel. The first thing I do when I get up is to have a cup of warm water. After that, I tapped the lymphatic points of my body, swing my arms up and down 100 times, and walk on the spot for 100 steps.  The next set of stretching and breathing exercises is done at the car porch. This is to warm up my body before I perform tai chi. The taichi movements take about  15 minutes to perform. I feel calm and fresh upon completion. I wash up and brush my teeth. Next, I go for a walk and jog for 2km for about 30 minutes around the Kemunting field in front of the Indian temple.  I feel good breathing in the fresh air and basking in the morning sun

Upon reaching home I prepare my own breakfast, I have mee hoon soup with broccoli and minced pork meat and one tomato or Maaggi curry mee mixed with broccoli, one tomato, and minced pork. Sometimes I have poa in the morning. My morning beverage is black coffee without milk or sugar. I love to eat breakfast at one of the hawker centers or coffee shops, However, during this critical period, I eat at home.

At around 8 am I am ready to start work in front of my PC. I check emails and look for surveys to participate. If there are more surveys to answer it can take up to one or two hours. Answering surveys is a productive way to spend my time and make some pocket money at home. The next task is to review and check my previously written articles using Grammarly It is a fantastic tool to check spelling, grammar, and punctuation. After checking I upload the articles to social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Scoopit

I have a good nap for about an hour in the afternoon from one to two o'clock.  Teatime is around 3 o'clock  I have a pao (a Chinese steamed bun). or wholewheat bread spread with peanut butter. I check emails for more surveys and upload more articles in the late afternoon.

At around 4pmm I do another set of stretching exercises and also push-up to strengthen my body.

Dinner time is around 6pm. I help in the washing-up after eating

In the evening this is the only time I watch TV. It is from 8-9 pm watching TV8 news. It is also a time to relax and ready to end a day peacefully. I have a cup of  Oat drink after the news. Reading a chapter or two is my routine before going to bed. I read until my eyes are tied and so it is easy for me to fall asleep.

I try not to go out and I connect with friends and relatives by WhatsApp and  Facetime. The only time to go out is to purchase household items and fresh goods.

I am happy with my life:

It is a healthy lifestyle and a simple life.
I am active daily to keep my body and  brain healthy and fit
I eat nutritiously with more vegetables and fruits and less meat
I sleep well and under no stress
I occupy my time fully and productively by blogging, reading, and answering surveys
I contribute to the world by sharing my articles about life, happiness, and money that are beneficial to everyone on the Net
I have a pet dog Peanut the Poodle to share my life

Ringworm and Treatment

Ringworm

Ten years ago in 2009, I was infected with ringworm. I wrote an article about the effective treatment of fungal infections (https://allaboutlivingwithlife.blogspot.com/2009/05/ringworm-calamine-and-clotrimazole.html). Initially, I used calamine and found the cream infective because it was not the right medication. I then switched to clotrimazole and treated the diseased area of my sole successfully.

Recently I was infected with ringworm again. Immediately, I applied clotrimazole. This time the result was not as good as expected after a few weeks. In desperation, I consulted my family doctor and he prescribed Travocort Cream for me. This medicine contains two active substances, isoconazole nitrate and diflucortolone valerate.

According to information provided this medicine is used to treat fungal infections of the skin where inflammation (redness, swelling, soreness) is also a problem.

Upon my first application, the itch stopped right away. After a few days, it was completely healed.

Ringworm initially starts out as red or pink skin patches (or spots) that may be either flat or slightly raised. In this initial stage, the sores may be moist, but more often they're dry, scaly, and itchy. If you scratch the rash you may break the skin, which could lead to a bacterial infection.

Have you ever infected with ringworm? How did you deal with it?

How to Live a Secure and Meaningful Retirement

A secure and meaningful retirement

Retirement is like a long vacation in Las Vegas. The goal is to enjoy it the fullest, but not so fully that you run out of money. Jonathan Clements

I am 71, I am a husband and a father to one son and one daughter. I have a part-time office job in the morning for six days a week. My son is working in Singapore and my daughter in at UTAR studying Economics. The purpose of this article is to share my thinking and the way I live my retirement now.

Retirement should bring happiness and contentment. You should be able to look forward to every new day with excitement. The following vital factors are crucial not only for a secure but meaningful life.

Health is Your Responsibility
Health is wealth. With good health, you enjoy the freedom and live life to the fullest. To maintain a healthy body is not only for your own good but is also a responsibility. Just imagine when you are suffering from a serious illness such as a stroke, who is going to take care of you daily? Your family members of course.  They may not have the time and resources to look after you. When they don’t, you blame them for not being filial. So the point I want to bring out is that life is already stressful for each and every one of us. Do not be a burden to those around you.as they have their life to take care of. You can look after yourself when you are healthy and fit.

Daily Rituals
Every morning I wake up around six and after drinking a glass of water I do stretching TaiChi and breathing exercise at the car porch. This is my morning rituals. For about twice a week I do weight lifting ( I have a home gym) at home and jog around the field just opposite the Indian temple at Sri Kemuning. The only time I watch TV is the 8TV News at 8pm. in the evening. To get a good night sleep I read a few pages of a book. Reading stimulates your mind and promotes mental health. I borrow books from the nearby state library. In the afternoon, I enjoy a nap from time to time. To occupy my free time I do online surveys (https://creditcardlighthouse.blogspot.com/2016/03/top-10-survey-sites-in-malaysia.html) and earn some pocket money.

In the evening I pen a few lines in my diary to express my gratefulness and appreciation for a great day. On a regular basis, I invite a good friend of mine to a movie and tea. I live life with energy, serenity, peace of mind and focus.

Your house is your castle
Your son’s house is not your house and on;y your house is truly your own. Do not be so naive to sell your house and stay with your son upon request. Your daughter-in-law may not like the idea and if you are unfortunate to get chase out of the house you will be homeless. Your personal home means security, freedom and peace of mind. There again it is assumed that you are in good health and able to take care of your own self.

My part-time job
A part-time job suits me well. I earn and I keep myself busy for half a day and get connected with the business world It gives me a sense of purpose and usefulness. I used to write one article for one day Now I do it only when I have important messages to share like this article. that you are reading now.

Money
I am not rich but I am debt-free. I hope, God willing, my savings and investment are able to outlive my life and not the other way round. I do keep a sum for emergency purposes because life is full of unexpected happenings and you need to spend money immediately.

Continuous Learning
The world is moving at a rapid pace with technology advancement. I read and learn continuous to update myself. I implement useful technologies such as e-wallet to keep up with the time. It is the best way to stimulate your brain.

Peanut the Poodle
A pet at home is a great companion. Peanut is the greatest source of inspiration, happiness and serenity. He is the best security guard in the world. He will bark loudly at the slightest noise or movement at the gate otherwise he is quiet and peaceful. He greets you warmly every time you come home. My pet has an Instagram account. Please follow Peanut the Poodle at https://www.instagram.com/peanut_thepoodle/. It's good to know that keeping a pet is good for my health too.

A quiet and simple life

Seeking excitement is for the youngsters. As for me, it is a fond memory of the younger days. Now a quiet and simple life suits me fine.

Happiness

The formula for Happiness:
Health + gratitude+ mindfulness+financial freedom+lifelong learning= Happiness
where Health =1 and the rest are zeros.
When you are not in good health the rest of the things are meaningless to you.

In his book Man’s Search for Meaning, Frankl wrote, “Happiness cannot be pursued, it must ensue. One must have a reason to be happy.”

Summary
  • Be healthy and fit
  • Thank gratitude always
  • You may have retired from work but do not retire from living an active and meaningful life.
  • A house of your own
  • Sufficient fund to live and enjoy your retirement

5 Words To Live By

5 Words To Live By

Words are singularly the most powerful force available to humanity. We can choose to use this force constructively with words of encouragement, or destructively using words of despair. Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate, and to humble. -Yehuda Berg

Here are 5 simple yet powerful words to bring you meaning, energy, focus, and enthusiasm in many ways. However, merely knowing the words is useless, you must make changes in your life to live by these words. Taking action will bring you positive results beyond your imagination. Here are the five wonderful and yet down-to-earth words to bring you success in life:

1. Grateful: Gratitude is the most important word. Because gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues but the parent of all others according to Marcus Tullius Cicero.

To me, gratitude is about contentment and appreciation. Always count your blessings and be happy with what you are and what you have.

Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude, says Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings. These are the golden words of William Arthur Ward.

How do you cultivate an attitude of gratitude? This is what I do every night before I go to sleep. I write in my diary on a few things that I am thankful about. It can simply be good health, good work or just feeling good for another great day.

2. Calm: With thankfulness and gratefulness, there is no jealousy and hatred in your heart. There is peace of mind because you don’t compare yourself with others, you will just be happy with yourself.

I get up by six every morning to do Taichi and breathing exercises. Taichi is meditation in motion; I get into a state of calmness to start a new day.

3. Mindful: When you are grateful and calm, your mind does not wonder about. There is nothing to disturb your peace of mind. You develop mindfulness to live moment to moment. You focus on the task at hand. You do not rush about; you enjoy your work and your leisure time.

For me mindfulness is paying attention to what you do in the present be it reading, eating, jogging, or listening. Because I am grateful and I feel a sense of serenity; I live every day with mindfulness.

4. Productive: There is enough time for you to do things which you have to do and there is time for you to do what you want to do. This is my interpretation of productivity.

I set long-term goals and I organize my daily activities in advance by way of a to-do-list. I have a daily checklist to monitor my progress so that I am on top of things. I don’t want to remember my work, I just write things down. Your brain is for creative thinking and not for mundane tasks. There is time for me in the evening after work to jog in the open. I am pleased to have dinner regularly with my family in the evening. I am free to watch TV news and read a few pages before I retire to recharge my battery for another brand new day.

5. Happy: Happiness is what you want the most in your life. I have decided to leave it as the last word for a very good reason. You do not seek happiness directly; it is a by-product of your thinking and what you do in your daily life. When your thinking is positive, you will be happy. Thoughts of gratefulness and appreciation will generate containment and calmness in your life. When you are not disturbed you are at peace with the world. You will live from moment to moment focusing on the task at hand and thinking of nothing else. You are productive. Naturally, a feeling of joy and happiness will prevail.

Last words

Gratefulness, calmness, mindfulness, and productivity are my bywords. I live by these words, happiness comes to me naturally. Take the challenge, incorporate these five words into your life and transform yourself.

13. Don't think of rest as giving in. Rather, consider a nap, or even closing your eyes for five minutes, as something you've worked hard for, something you've earned, like the interest in a bank account. Instead of banishing the nap, try to find ways to comfortable fold it into your life. View the nap as you might perceive vitamins and exercise. Remove words like slothful and lazy from your nap vocabulary. Replace them with declarations like "Naps are good for my soul" and "A little rest will make me feel like a million bucks. -Leslie Levine

14. Activity and rest are two vital aspects of life. To find a balance in them is a skill in itself. Wisdom is knowing when to have rest, when to have activity, and how much of each to have. Finding them in each other-- activity in rest and rest in activity--is the ultimate freedom. -Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

15. There is virtue in work and there is virtue in rest. Use both and overlook neither. -Alan Cohen
