7 Inspiring Lessons I Learned from a Blind Stranger

Blind woman with walking stick

Last week, I was on the bus, on my way home. After a few stops, a blind woman got up the bus, after which the lady sitting beside me promptly gave up her seat for her. (That lady beat me to it as I was sitting on the inside seat.)
As the blind woman (whom I’ll refer to as X) sat down beside me, I took a glance. X looked like she was in her 50s with a cheery disposition. Curious to know her story, I struck up a conversation.
“On your way home?” I asked.
“What?” X replied, a little surprised, probably since people in Singapore usually keep to themselves. Realizing that I’m just being friendly, she quickly replied with a, “Yes, yes.”
“I see. Which stop are you alighting?” I asked, thinking of helping her to keep a look when the stop comes.
“Oh, I’m taking the bus all the way the interchange,” she said. This meant that she was alighting at the final stop, so there wouldn’t be a need for me to help her watch out.
“I see,” I replied with a nod. “Well, I’m alighting before you, at Bukit Panjang. I live at YYY; I still need to walk a little after alighting to get home,” I continued, deciding to share my personal information as a way of connecting with her.
And thereby began a 30-minute conversation which lasted all the way till I alighted. I learned that:
  • X is a masseuse; she has been so for the past 10 years.
  • She used to be able-sighted and only became blind in her later adult years, probably in her late 30s to early 40s (she didn’t explain why she became blind; I didn’t ask).
  • After she became blind, she approached the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH) and picked up new skills as a blind, including massaging. She worked for SAVH for a while before switching to a commercial massage company as they have higher pay.
  • As her company is in the town area, she commutes daily to work by bus, for about an hour each way. She travels without assistance, save for her walking stick and the occasional Samaritan to help her lookout for the bus. Her husband cooks dinner and waits for her to reach home before eating in every day.
As I listened to X’s story, I was amazed. 残而不废 was what I was thinking the whole time – I even said this to X. It’s a Chinese saying that means that disability doesn’t mean uselessness. While X is visually handicapped, it hasn’t stopped her from being of value to society. She proactively approached SAVH to learn new skills such as massage and used that skill to gain employment, thereby making herself an asset to society and able to earn a living for herself despite her condition.
残而不废 was what I was thinking the whole time
While I was previously feeling frustrated about my wedding preparation work (more on that in a future probable wedding series!), chatting with X helped me to gain perspective on my problem. Suddenly, the issues that I was facing didn’t seem so troubling (though they were still valid issues). Here are seven lessons that all of us can learn from her:
  1. You are not alone in your problems. Sometimes, being stuck in a predicament can make us feel like we’re alone in our problems while everyone is out there having a great life. This is nothing more than a false belief though. Everyone faces problems — and chances are there are people out there facing the exact same problem as you are, perhaps even worse than what you are facing. Don’t feel that you’re alone because you never are.
  2. Your problems are only as big as you make them out to be. I don’t know how many people I know who can lose their sight and still be positive and be proactive about living. Probably less than five. Sight is one of my most treasured senses, and it’s one of my greatest fears to lose my sight one day (touch wood). I’m sure it’s the same for others.
Yet for this blind lady, she exudes an optimistic persona despite having lost her sight — and she used to be able-sighted. It’s not like she was born blind, in which case she would have no comparison point as to how life with sight is like. She refuses to make her issues bigger than what they are, which is why she is still happy despite being blind.
What problem are you facing now? Are you making them out to be huge issues when they can be logically worked out with time and patience? As I always say, happiness is a state of mind. Don’t give more weight to your problems than they deserve; to do so would be to exhaust yourself.
  3. Be grateful that things aren’t worse. No matter how bad things are now, they can always be worse, trust me. The fact that you are alive, with (I assume) a roof over your head and internet access (in order to read this article), means that you are much better off than a significant portion of the world’s population.
While that may seem surprising, it isn’t. Did you know that 50% of the world’s population lives on less than $2.50 a day? That 80% of the world’s population live on less than $10 a day? And that 22,000 children die each day due to poverty? (Source: Statistic Brain.) How much did you spend on your last meal outside? Probably more than $2.50. Mine was $4 USD: a Subway Veggie Delite sandwich and drink.
Sometimes, it’s hard for us to realize that many people out there are worse off than us because we’re surrounded by supposedly richer, better, and happier folks. This isn’t true though. We are truly much better off than many people in the world. So, chin up! Be grateful for the problems that you get to face, because they remind us of how good our life really is.
  4. Act on your problem. After X became blind, she didn’t resign herself to a life of nothingness. Rather, she looked up SAVH and took classes there. She picked up massaging as a skill. After that, she became a masseur and achieved gainful employment.
If your problem is making you unhappy, then act on it. What changes your problems isn’t the feelings that you harbor, but the actions you take to address them. Identify what can be done to fix things, and act on them. Don’t mull in your problems because doing so will be to give them weight.
  5. Let go of the things that can’t be changed. Sometimes there are things that can’t be changed no matter what you do. For example in X’s situation, she can’t change her blindness. So, she focuses on the things that can be acted on — picking up skills as a blind, making herself employable despite being blind, and not being a liability to her family.
For the problem you are facing, what are the things that can be changed? What can’t be changed? Focus on the things that can be changed; let go of the things that can’t. The more you hang on to that which can’t be changed, the unhappier you’ll be. The more you act on the actionable items, the more empowered and happier you will be.
  6. Focus on giving. During our conversation, I was amazed at how selfless X was. Since X is working in a massage company, I was interested to learn more about her company and possibly get a massage under her, as a way of supporting her. (She gets a variable pay, so the more customers she serves, the more she earns.) However, rather than “sell” me about her company and massage service, she kept telling me about the massage service by SAVH and encouraged me to get my massage there, so that the blind employees can earn some income. I believe that’s because she used to work at SAVH and she knows how low their pay is, so she just wants to help wherever possible.
  7. When you are facing a problem, does your attention shift to focus on yourself, or do you still show care and concern to others around you? Sometimes I can get engulfed in big issues, but I always remind myself to never neglect the people I care about and the people out there whom I’ve pledged my life to serve. Similarly for you, never forget to care for others no matter how bad things are. You’ll be much happier and abundant that way. You create your future. X was working at SAVH for a while, but her pay was minimal since it is a non-profit and the massage fees are low. She then sought out commercial massage companies for employment. Now, most companies will never consider hiring the blind, but she eventually found one that accepted her. She has since been working there for 10 years and counting. If X had assumed that the commercial companies weren’t going to employ her, she would have stuck to working at the blind association and not ventured out to seek employment at those companies — which would have in turn made this a self-fulfilling prophecy. The reason why she managed to get a job with better pay was that she asked. She made things happen. How many of us create self-fulfilling problems for ourselves? We assume that we aren’t going to get X or that Y isn’t going to happen, so we don’t even try to make things happen. However, we create our future. We are the CEO of our lives. Don’t let your limiting beliefs hold you back; rather, create the future that you seek. Read: 7 Limiting Beliefs Keeping You from Living Your Best LifeWhatever you are facing, remember you’re not alone in it; all of us are working through issues all the time. It’s not our problems that define us but how we react to the problems that define us.

Are You on Holiday Every Day?

Holiday

When you are on holiday, you are totally relaxed and your mind is focused on where you are. You pay attention and observe the surrounding because you are in unfamiliar places. You also look at the people there and watch closely how they go about living their life. When you are eating, you are also mindful and eat slowly to savor the food because you don’t get to eat it every day. A holiday is enjoyable and the memory is sweet and lasting because you are totally absorbed in what you are doing.
The question is: Are you on holiday every day? I know you can’t be going on a holiday every day, but can you go to work in a holiday mood?
When you are at work, you behave differently. You are tensed and working under stress and you may not enjoy what you do. Can you switch to a holiday mood while at work?
You can change your mindset and transform it into a holiday mood when you go to work. When you do, you will look at your workplace more kindly:

·         Just relax: Instead of getting worked up, why not work with a calm mind? You feel good while working when you tell yourself to loosen up.

·         Pay attention: Your mind is focused on what you do when you explore places. Do the same when you are working on the task at hand. Be interested and work with your heart and do the best you can. It is your attitude that determines how well you do a job.

·         Go slow: When you are on holiday, you feel free and easy because you are not in a hurry. Why not behave the same when you are working. When you have already planned and organized your day, there is no need to feel uptight. Work a little slower to avoid feeling restless and stressed.  Things still get done when you are feeling relaxed and composed.

·         Develop an interest: Switch on your holiday mood, observe and look closer at what you do. Think of what you can do so that you can work more productively by being more efficient and effective. When you love your work, your work will love you back.

·         Take breaks: When you are on a holiday, you welcome a deserving break to have a cup of coffee or lunch after walking here and there. After that, you are fresh and energetic and looking forward to going sightseeing again. Do you ignore breaks while at work? Do you work continuously without taking your lunch or eat and work? These are unproductive and unhealthy habits. Be in a holiday mood and take your breaks and go for your lunch.

Are you ready to go on a holiday every day?

10 Positive Attitudes to Acquire

Positive attitudes

There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative. ~
W. Clement Stone

You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you, and in that, you will be mastering change rather than allowing it to master you. ~ Brian Tracy

Attitude is everything. A positive attitude is your passport to a happy and satisfying life because life will be full of opportunities and possibilities. What are the positive attitudes that you can equip to face challenges in life? Here are ten of them and I urge you to add more to this list:

1.      Taking risks: It is the courage to get out of your comfort zone and do something new and different. The experience is more important than the outcome. The more you do, the broader will be your horizon. Taking risks is also making changes and be progressive.

Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far they can go. ~ T.S. Eliot

2.      Act not react: To lead is to take initiative and to do what is necessary to do instead of reacting to events to unfold. You are judged by your proactive action and not how you put out a fire during an emergency.

3.      Think success: Positive thoughts promote confidence and a bright outlook in things you do. You are motivated by what is possible and discouraged by what is not possible.

4.      Be optimistic: Optimism means hopefulness. Hope is a powerful force that propels you to carry on living because you expect good things to happen.

The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. ~ Winston Churchill

5.      Aim high – Setting challenging goals and expecting the best is the way to achieve greatness in life. You can go as far as you think you can.

6.      Committed: You are determined to carry on no matter what. Once your mind is set, nothing can stop you from going where you are going. When you start you expect to finish it as well.

7.      Be responsible: You are responsible for your own life. You decide what to do when to do it and how to do it. Just do not blame others for the outcome. When you fail, you are willing to accept the fact and learn a valuable lesson, and then you move on wiser in a different way.

8.      Attention to detail: You are meticulous in discharging your work. The quality of your work matters a lot to you. It is your reputation and your image that is at stake. You are what you do.

9.      Happy at work: Happiness is a positive attitude. Be cheerful and enjoy what you do. Make changes if you can, but live with it and change yourself for those things that you cannot change.

10.  Welcome problems: A positive attitude is to react to what happens to you with an open mind. Instead of dwelling on a problem you actively look for a solution to it. To you, if there is a will there is a way, nothing is impossible.

It’s not what happens to you that determines how far you will go in life, it is how you handle what happens to you. ~ Zig Ziglar

Our attitude toward life determines life's attitude towards us. ~ Earl Nightingale

Getting Positive Attitude At Work

Positive attitude

Success or failure in business is caused more by the mental attitude even than by mental capacities. ~ Sir Walter Scott

Your attitude determines your happiness and success at work. A positive attitude is the right way to work and it offers you many benefits and advantages:

  1. Willing to change: When there is a change, there is progress. Be receptive to changes in the workplace. Look for the benefits of the changes that are taking place around you. When you accept changes you are also making progress.

  1. Accept criticism with an open mind: Just think about it, if there is no criticism, it means people are not bothered with you. When they care for you, they enlighten and you have to look at yourself critically and amend your way of doing things.

  1. Welcome problems: You can only show how good you are by solving problems. The negative response is to start complaining about them. A problem is a golden opportunity for you to showcase your creativity and resourcefulness. The more problems you can solve the more confident you will be.

A positive attitude may not solve every problem but it makes solving any problem a more pleasant experience. ~ Grant Fairley

  1. Create values for the company: Always seek improvement for the company, reduce cost, or improve margin. You can also suggest ways to run the operation more efficiently and effectively. Don’t be complacent.

  1. Getting trusted:  The most crucial aspect of your career is getting trusted. If others cannot count on you, you will not be given important assignments and your job is as good as gone.  Avoid getting into an attitude of couldn’t-care-less; be trusted to advance your career.

  1. Learning new skills:  Be willing to learn new skills and make yourself more valuable in the workplace.  Technology advancements require you to keep up with new methods of doing things. The only way to be ahead and stay ahead is to adopt an attitude of continuous learning.

  1. Be interested in others: If you don’t get interested in others, how would you get others to be interested in you? When you show a genuine interest in others you can get things done smoothly through them. You may be the boss, but they will do things wholeheartedly and willingly.

  1. Keep your boss posted: Do not just do your work and ignore the boss. Keep him posted about what you do and send him advance notice of impending issues so that he can be prepared. When you keep your boss notified about what you do, you allow your boss to notice you. When you are noticed you open up many  opportunities,

  1. Communicate effectively: It is essential to communicate precisely, fully, and clearly at the workplace. Ambiguity creates misunderstanding, confusion, and getting the wrong things done. Be very clear about the message that you wish to convey.

  1. Approachable: Put on a smiling face when you are at work. Project a friendly image and be sincere when you deal with others. Avoid thinking of your personal problems while at work.

Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as, by the way, your mind looks at what happens. ~ Kahlil Gibran

Positive Attitude For Success

Positive attitude

A 'positive attitude' is definitely one of the keys to success.
My definition of a positive attitude is a simple one:
Looking for the good in all circumstances.
Catherine Pulsifer

Attitude is an expression of your thoughts and inner feelings. It is reflected outwardly by how you behave and do things either positively or negatively. Here are ways to develop a positive attitude in you and be successful.

1.       Make the best of what you have: When life hands you lemons, make lemonade, there goes the saying. Do not complain about your circumstances. Do the best you can with what you have.

2.       Be yourself: You are a unique individual with all the strengths and weaknesses just like everyone else. Accept yourself as to what you are and don’t compare yourself with others.  You never know others may have more problems

3.       Passion and goals: You will think highly of your self-worth when you are passionate about something and set goals to realize your dreams.  Do not let limiting belief to short-charge yourself. Be creative and be different to get what you want in life.

4.       Health: One way to be positive and stay positive is to stay fit and healthy. Feeling good about yourself fortifies your positive attitude

5.       How you react to things is more important than what happens to you: You don’t blame others for your mistakes or failures, but you accept the fact and take corrective action. When things do not go your way, you make changes to reduce the impact of an adverse situation. In short, you respond positively and do what you can instead of cursing and complaining.

6.       Bounce back: Do not be discouraged by past failures, learn from them, and avoid making the same mistakes and be resilient. Have faith that things will work out as long as you work persistently and don’t give up.

7.       Be interested in others: One healthy attitude is to be interested and do good to others. Getting peace of mind is to be kind and willing to forgive others. A calm mind promotes a positive attitude.

8.       Be happy: According to Francesca Reigler Happiness is an attitude.  We either make ourselves miserable, or happy and strong.  The amount of work is the same.  Happiness creates a cheerful outlook in life and you expect good things to happen.

9.       Live today: Do not live on regrets. Start a new day like a new beginning. Live in the moment and concentrate on the tasks at hand because your future is decided by what you do now.

10.   Ask for it: Think positively, act positively, and behave positively to reinforce your positive attitude. Ask for it  and you will get it

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.  Winston Churchill
